Where and how to find my UPS tracking number?
Your UPS tracking number is the key to monitoring your package’s journey from dispatch to delivery. Typically provided by the sender or merchant, you can locate it through several ways:
- Shipping Confirmation Emails: After a purchase or shipment, you often receive a confirmation email from UPS or the seller. This email usually contains your tracking number.
- UPS Shipping Labels: If you have the physical package, the tracking number is printed on the shipping label—usually located near the barcode.
- Receipts or Invoices: Check your receipt or invoice (digital or paper) for tracking details, especially when shipping directly from a UPS Store or drop-off location.
- Online Retailer Account: For online purchases, log into your account on the retailer’s website. Navigate to your order history or order details page, where the tracking number should be listed alongside your recent orders.
- UPS Account: If you have registered for a UPS My Choice account, log in to view your incoming and outgoing shipments. Your account dashboard will display the tracking numbers for all associated packages.
- Contact the Sender: If you’re unable to locate your tracking number, reach out to the sender or merchant directly. They can provide the tracking number, as they have a record of the shipment.
What do my UPS Tracking Number look like?
The following formats are used for UPS tracking numbers:
- 1Z9999999999999999
- 999999999999
- T9999999999
- 999999999
UPS also tracks other types of tracking numbers, which can have a length ranging from seven to 20 characters. These include:
- Delivery Order or Sub-PRO Number: Used for tracking Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) and Truckload (TL) child shipments.
- UPS Delivery Notice: A bar-coded notice given on the first delivery attempt in select countries. It includes a 12-digit reference number.
- UPS Service Notice: A notice given on the first delivery attempt in select countries.
- House Air Waybill: Used for tracking air freight movement.
- House Bill of Lading: Used for tracking ocean freight movement.
- PRO Number: Used for tracking surface freight movement.
What does UPS tracking status mean?
| Label Status | Description |
|---|---|
| Label Created | We have received the shipment details and billing information from the sender. Once we have possession of the shipment and it is moving within our network, the status will be updated. |
| Shipped/On the Way | The shipment has been received and is in transit through our network. It has a scheduled delivery date. Shipments may remain in this status until they are out for final delivery. Note that for long-distance shipments, there may not be further scanning until they reach their destination hub. |
| Out for Delivery | The local UPS facility has received the shipment and dispatched it to a driver for final delivery. Unless a time-definite air delivery service has been chosen by the sender, packages are typically delivered between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. (occasionally later) for residences, and by close of business for commercial addresses. |
| Delivered | The shipment has been delivered to its final destination, with a recorded timestamp of the delivery. If no signature is required, our driver will attempt to find a secure place to leave the shipment, such as a front porch, side door, back porch, or garage area, to keep it out of sight and protected from adverse weather conditions. |
| Delivered to a UPS Access Point | A selected UPS Access Point location has received the shipment and it is ready for pickup at the receiver's convenience. |
| Transferred to Post Office for Delivery | The sender requested the shipment to be transferred to the local post office for final delivery. Please allow an additional day or two for the delivery to be completed. |
| Exception | The shipment is within the UPS network; however, an unexpected error has occurred, which may result in a change to the scheduled delivery date. The reason for the exception will be specified in the Shipment Progress section of the Tracking Detail page. If the delivery date changes, the tracking status will display the new date. |
Get real-time tracking notifications with AfterShip
With an AfterShip subscription or the AfterShip Mobile App, you can stay informed at every stage of your package with real-time tracking notifications. Whether you’re waiting on a personal delivery or managing business shipments, AfterShip ensures you never miss an update.
How long does it take for UPS to update tracking?
UPS typically updates tracking information in real-time as packages progress through its system. Here's what you can generally expect:
- Real-Time Scans: Packages are scanned at key stages such as the origin facility, transit hubs, and upon delivery. These scans prompt immediate updates to the tracking information.
- Standard Update Frequency: Under normal conditions, tracking updates occur within a few hours following each scan. This real-time approach ensures you can monitor the package's journey closely.
- Peak Period Delays: During high-volume periods, such as holidays, you might experience slight delays in tracking updates due to the increased number of shipments.
- Geographical Variations: In rural or remote areas, updates may be less frequent, leading to longer intervals between scans and tracking information refreshes.
- End-of-Day Updates: While most updates happen soon after a scan, some may not appear until the end of the business day, especially if the package is in transit between major facilities.
- International Shipments: For packages crossing international borders, tracking updates might take a bit longer to reflect, given the additional customs procedures and time zone differences.

- Verify Tracking Number:
Double-check that you've entered the correct tracking number. Even a small typo can prevent you from seeing the correct updates. - Allow 24-48 Hours:
Tracking updates may be delayed due to carrier processing times, especially during weekends, holidays, or peak seasons. Give it 24-48 hours before taking action. - Check for Delivery Status:

If the package was shipped by a retailer or another party, contact them to confirm the shipment details and to see if they can assist in resolving the tracking issue.
By taking these steps, you can determine the status of your shipment and ensure it reaches you as scheduled.
What should I do if my package doesn’t arrive?

Look around the delivery area (doorstep, mailbox, etc.) and check with neighbors to see if the package was delivered nearby. - Contact UPS Customer Service:
Reach out to UPS customer support. Provide your tracking number and any relevant information to help them investigate the issue. - File a Lost Package Claim:
If the package is deemed missing, UPS allows you to file a claim for lost packages. Ensure you have all necessary documentation ready, such as order confirmation and tracking number. - Communicate with the Sender:
