Where and how to find my UPS Freight tracking number?

To track a UPS Freight shipment, you’ll need one of the following identifiers: a freight tracking number, progressive rotating order (PRO) number, or bill of lading (BOL) number. Here’s where and how you can locate them:

  • Shipping Confirmation Emails or Receipts: When a freight shipment is arranged, UPS or your logistics provider typically sends a confirmation email. This includes:
    • UPS Freight Tracking Number
    • PRO Number (used primarily for LTL freight)
    • BOL Number (used to identify the shipment on the bill of lading document)
  • Bill of Lading Document: The bill of lading (BOL) is the official shipping document provided by the shipper or carrier. This document includes:
    • PRO Number (used by carriers to manage LTL shipments)
    • BOL Number (a unique identifier for your shipment)
    • Shipper and consignee information

What does my UPS Freight tracking number look like?

Understanding the format of your UPS Freight (now operating as TForce Freight) identifiers is essential for accurate tracking. Below is a breakdown of what each type of number typically look like:

  1. UPS Freight Tracking Number

UPS Freight tracking numbers are typically numeric-only, ranging from 9 to 12 digits. They are used primarily for LTL shipments.

    • These numbers are provided in shipment confirmations or freight receipts.
    • They do not start with “1Z” like standard UPS small package tracking numbers.
  2. PRO Number (Progressive Rotating Order Number)

A PRO number is a carrier-assigned LTL shipment number, used commonly in the freight industry. UPS assigns a unique PRO number to each LTL shipment:

    • Usually 9 to 10 digits long.
    • May include a carrier SCAC prefix in some contexts (e.g., UPSN123456789).
    • Often found on the BOL, invoice, or shipping label.
  3. Bill of Lading (BOL) Number

The BOL number is associated with the billing of lading document, which acts as a contract and receipt for freight services.

    • The BOL number is often alphanumeric.
    • It is issued by the shipper or carrier and can be found on the BOL document itself.

What are Less-than-Truckload (LTL) and Full Truckload (FTL)?

• LTL (Less-than-Truckload) shipping is used when a shipment doesn’t require a full truck—typically weighing between 150 and 15,000 pounds. Multiple shipments from different shippers are consolidated in one truck.
