Before we talk about HTTPS, first, let’s understand what HTTP is.
HTTP or Hypertext Transfer Protocol is an application protocol used on the Internet for formatting and transmitting messages. HTTP is used to establish a safe and secure connection between you and the website you visit.
Breaking down HTTP word by word,
The Hypertext part in the name means that the link contains documents or files like text, images, videos, and graphics and links to other documents or files for cross-referencing that can be accessed simply by clicking the link.
The Transfer part means that the documents and files can be transferred across the World Wide Web from one networked computer to another.
The Protocol part means that the link uses computer rules that control how the devices can access the Internet.
In a nutshell, HTTP is a set of rules and standards that defines how hypertext files are transferred over the web between the browsers and servers.
HTTPS or Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure is the secure version of HTTP. It signifies a more safe connection between the browsers and websites. HTTPS messages are encrypted by an encryption protocol known as Transport Layer Security (TLS). HTTPS is critical when users transmit sensitive data like bank login credentials, health insurance information, or email.
Google marks all the non-HTTPS URLs as “Not secure” with a red warning icon in the URL status bar to warn users that the websites they are about to enter aren’t safe and hold a chance of possible data breach.
