At a few thousand labels a week, rate shopping only pays if every service you are paying for gets compared, and if the choice reflects how carriers actually perform on your lanes. This guide sets AfterShip Shipping against ShipRush on the six things a mid-market operations team checks before it moves label tools.
AfterShip Shipping compares live carrier-account rates beside discounted-label services, and informs each carrier choice with delivery-performance data from AfterShip Tracking. If you are evaluating a ShipRush alternative, those two mechanics are what the decision turns on.
What Rate Comparison Costs Your Team at a Few Thousand Labels a Week
Start with your own floor numbers. Before you judge any ShipRush real-time shipping rate comparison, count how many services actually get compared per shipment, then count how often someone opens a carrier's own site to re-check a rate before releasing the label.
The second number is the expensive one. Every manual re-check is warehouse labour, and every shipment released on a service nobody compared is margin you spent without deciding to.
Even satisfied ShipRush users name the same friction points:
- A Capterra reviewer in shipping, 5 November 2024: "Tends to slow down and needs constant refreshing after consistent shipping"
- A G2 reviewer, a small-business CEO, 22 January 2024: "Sometimes laggy when comparing rates and dates between carriers"
- A Capterra reviewer in customer service, 4 September 2024: "The UI isn't the most intuitive and this affects the learning curve when using Ship Rush."
ShipRush's own documentation advises: "For best performance, limit comparisons to 2-4 services rather than all available options." On ShipRush, applying your own negotiated rates requires the Speedy plan or higher. It does not show customer-facing rates at checkout.
FedEx's published U.S. package standard list rates rise an average of 5.9% effective January 4, 2027, so the price of not comparing carriers goes up every year.
AfterShip Shipping's answer is to compare the services you connect and to inform the choice with how each one performs on the lane.
How AfterShip Shipping Compares Live Rates and Recommends a Carrier
AfterShip Shipping compares live rates from connected carriers and prints labels across 130+ carriers.
Two scopes sit behind that sentence: the rates you compare, and the carriers you can print labels with. Live rates come from your connected carrier accounts plus discounted-label services supplied through AfterShip's shipping partner, pulled from the carriers' shipping APIs. On Enterprise you can upload your own negotiated rates, and carriers without a rate API can have their rates imported by CSV. Together those two scopes are what you use to compare ecommerce shipping rates on a live order.
What sits on top of that comparison is where the carrier choice gets made:
- Smart Carrier Recommendation runs on all plans and is off by default. It compares live rates across your connected services, excludes services with a high exception rate for that shipment's origin and destination using AfterShip tracking data, and shows a recommended option with the reason it was picked. You can override it, and buyer-selected services and automation rules take priority.
- The Rates API, on Pro and Enterprise, displays available service types and rates at checkout, so the shopper sees the options before the order exists.
- Bulk label creation is available from Essentials, so the comparison does not have to happen one order at a time.
AfterShip vs. ShipRush: A Head-to-Head Comparison for Ops Managers
These six criteria are the ones a mid-market operations lead checks before moving multi-carrier shipping software, not a generic feature list. Read the ShipRush vs AfterShip rows below against your own lane mix and your own order sources. On pricing, ShipRush publishes flat monthly plans, and AfterShip Shipping publishes plans priced by label volume up to 300,000 labels a year, with Enterprise pricing above that.
| Criteria | AfterShip Shipping | ShipRush |
|---|---|---|
| Rate Comparison | Live rates from your connected carrier accounts beside discounted-label services. Smart Carrier Recommendation, on all plans, excludes services with a high exception rate on the lane using AfterShip tracking data. Rates at checkout through the Rates API, on Pro and Enterprise. | Live carrier-API rating for the accounts and services you enable. Its guidance is to compare 2-4 services for best performance. Own negotiated rates from Speedy. |
| Carrier Network (parcel, regional, LTL) | Labels across 130+ carriers for parcel shipping, parcel only. Connect your own carrier accounts: 1 on Free and Essentials, 5 on Pro, unlimited on Enterprise. | Parcel carriers, plus LTL freight on Warehouse or as an add-on. |
| Automation Rules | Rules set carrier and service by package weight and destination, on Pro and Enterprise, up to 10 rules below Enterprise. Smart Carrier Recommendation runs on every plan. | Rules with over 80 filters and over 260 actions, including rate-and-pick actions. |
| UI & Workflow | Browser-based. Bulk label creation from Essentials, and a recommended option shown with the reason it was picked. | Keyboard shortcuts and scanner hot keys for rating and shipping, bulk shipping with presets. |
| API & Integrations (ERP, WMS) | Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce and TikTok Shop. Shipping API on Pro and Enterprise, plus scheduled CSV order import over HTTP, FTP or SFTP on all plans. | 90+ sales channels, plus WMS, IMS, accounting, ERP and CRM integrations. NetSuite rating at order entry on Warehouse. |
| Integrated Post-Purchase Suite | One platform for shipping, tracking, returns, and warranty. Shipping labels sync into AfterShip Tracking when you add it, on a separate subscription, and AfterShip Returns adds a returns portal. | Branded tracking pages and branded shipment emails for UPS, FedEx and USPS shipments, plus return labels. Its own comparison page lists no returns portal. |
The Verdict: When to Choose AfterShip Over ShipRush
Across those six rows, the choice turns on two things: whether freight moves through the same tool as your parcels, and how you want each parcel's carrier chosen. If you are working out what to use instead of ShipRush, those two answers settle most of it. If you need to build a strong ROI case for the switch, start from your own lane data and label volume.
AfterShip Shipping is parcel-only: it does not rate or ship LTL freight, and it produces no bill of lading or pallet labels. For the parcel volume that makes up most of an omnichannel operation, the difference is in how each carrier gets chosen.
Choose ShipRush if:
- you ship LTL freight alongside parcels and need bills of lading in the same tool
- your orders start in NetSuite and you rate at order entry
Choose AfterShip Shipping if:
- you want live carrier-account rates and discounted-label services compared in one place
- you want the carrier choice informed by how services perform on each lane (Smart Carrier Recommendation, all plans)
- you show shipping rates to shoppers at checkout (Rates API, Pro and Enterprise)
- you need rules that set carrier and service by weight and destination (Pro and Enterprise)
- you plan to add AfterShip Tracking, Returns or Warranty, and want your Shipping labels to flow straight into Tracking
It's More Than Rate Shopping: Why an Integrated Platform Matters
AfterShip connects shipping, tracking, returns, and warranty on one platform.
AfterShip Shipping labels sync into AfterShip Tracking when you add it, on a separate subscription, and synced shipments count against your Tracking quota. AfterShip Tracking gives you a branded tracking page and notifications. AfterShip Returns gives you a returns portal.
Mous reduced WISMO tickets by 54% with AfterShip Tracking.
“AfterShip allowed us to set up KPI dashboards to see how well everything is going and troubleshoot before it becomes a problem.”

Making the Switch: Is Migrating from ShipRush Difficult?
Changing label tools mid-season is disruptive, and no operations team takes it on lightly.
Switching is a connect-and-rebuild process: connect your carrier accounts and store, rebuild your shipping rules in AfterShip, run AfterShip in parallel with ShipRush for a short period, then cut over. Standard support is included by email with a two-business-day response. If you want hands-on help, AfterShip offers paid support packages, with a customer success manager and onboarding manager on Silver and an implementation consultant on Gold, and dedicated onboarding can be scoped into an Enterprise agreement.
Order sources come across first. Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce and TikTok Shop connect directly, and any other order source comes in through the Shipping API on Pro and Enterprise, or through scheduled CSV order import over HTTP, FTP or SFTP on all plans. You reconnect your own carrier accounts so your negotiated rates apply, and how many you can hold depends on the plan: 1 on Free and Essentials, 5 on Pro, unlimited on Enterprise.
The rules are the part worth planning. Map each ShipRush rule to an AfterShip condition, package weight, destination and the others, and to its carrier-and-service action, before cutover rather than during it. Below Enterprise the rule count is capped, so list the ones you actually use first and rebuild those.
End-of-day forms follow where the label was made: labels created in the AfterShip Shipping portal use the portal's end-of-day forms, and labels created through the API use the manifest API instead. Keep ShipRush live through the cutover period while the first AfterShip labels print, so nothing ships on an untested rule.
If your shortlist still carries other leading shipping software, run the same six criteria across every option before you commit.
Simplify shipping and order fulfillment across Shopify, TikTok Shop, and your carrier network.

Does AfterShip Shipping support my negotiated carrier rates?
Yes. Connect your own carrier accounts in AfterShip Shipping and your negotiated rates apply to the rates it compares. Carrier accounts are limited to 1 on Free and Essentials, 5 on Pro, and unlimited on Enterprise. Discounted-label services are also available from the Essentials plan. Enterprise can also upload its own rates by CSV.
Can I automate carrier selection based on package weight?
AfterShip Shipping automation rules can set the carrier and service by package weight. Rules are available on Pro and Enterprise, with up to 10 rules below Enterprise, and they can key off destination as well as weight. Smart Carrier Recommendation runs on all plans and shows a recommended service with the reason it was picked. The same rules can also set the package type, package size and package weight as orders are imported.
Can AfterShip Shipping connect to my ERP?
Yes, through the Shipping API on Pro and Enterprise, or scheduled CSV order import over HTTP, FTP or SFTP on all plans. Both routes bring your orders into AfterShip Shipping for label creation. Orders brought in either way can then pick up your automation rules on Pro and Enterprise.
